Dwayne’s Comic Con News

July 25th, 2010

My con adventures can be found in bite-sized chunks on Twitter, or over at my official Facebook Page, but I had two announcements I thought I should post here:

Ben 10: Ultimate Alien returns 10/10/10. That’s October 10th, 2010, with an all-new one-hour special, written by me. Aggregor reveals his plans, Kevin’s secrets begin to be revealed, and Ben’s world will never be the same.

Also, Warner Home Video revealed the title of my next project, so I can finally talk about it. It’s a feature-length animated adaptation of one of the greatest stories in comic book history. And it will be out next spring:

My alumni magazine’s on-line edition has a very nice retrospective of my career.

“I can work in my pajamas and I get paid for lying,” said Dwayne McDuffie, a comic book writer who has also won several awards for his work in animation, including the television shows “Justice League Unlimited (JLU),” “Static Shock,” and “Ben 10: Alien Force,” as well as comics, including Marvel Comics’ “Damage Control,” DC Comics’ “Justice League of America” (upon which the JLU cartoon is based) and its Milestone line of titles.

“I like writing. I like telling stories. I love comics a crazy amount—it’s so much fun. It’s a labor of love, but it doesn’t really pay that much. I enjoy writing for animation, but it takes a lot of time and it’s a real job. Being a TV writer is like having homework for the rest of your life; you always owe somebody something. Very few evenings are yours.”

I didn’t think I was attending this year, but it turns out I’m going to be there all week. Because of the short notice, I’m only making three formal appearances this year, listed below:

FRIDAY

10:30-11:30 Nappy Hour— Keith Knight (the Knight Life, the K Chronicles, MAD) brings his informal gathering of African American creators out of the bar and onto the stage for an hour of tips, hints, secrets, and thoughts on how to make it in the comics biz. With Ned Cato, Jr. (GeekRoundTable.com), David Walker (BadAzzMofo.com), Spike Trotman (Templar AZ), and Dwayne McDuffie (Static Shock, Justice League).  Room 3

Since for once I’m not doing panels all day, I’m planning on hanging out with friends and maybe even buying some comics. As always, if you see me on the floor, say hello, I love to meet you guys, and I’ll always sign anything of mine you’ve got. See you in San Diego!

UPDATE!! I WON’T Be At “Kids Read Comics” June 12-13

June 6th, 2010

My sincere regrets, due to a personal emergency, I will NOT be attending the Kids Read Comics convention this weekend. Sorry for the last minute notice. You should still attend though, it’s going to be a very fun Con.

Screen shot 2010-06-06 at 3.09.14 PM

I’ll be spending next weekend just over the border from my home town of Detroit, at the 2nd annual “Kids Read Comics” Convention. It’s June 12 & 13, 2010 at the Henry Ford Centennial Library in Dearborn. I’ll be doing two panels, well, actually the same panel on two days:

Panel Discussion – Life In The Writers’ Room

Sat, June 12th, 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM

Sun, June 13, 11:00 AM to 12:00 AM

Picture yourself in a little room full of writers planning the next big animated series… now live it! Experience of what happens when the writers get together to develop episodes for an animated series with Dwayne McDuffie of Ben 10: Ultimate Alien, Static Shock and Justice League Unlimited.

Teens/Adults – Registration Required

I’ll also have a table, and I’ll be hawking a fine selection of Trade paperbacks of some of my best comics. I’m thinking about bringing some animation scripts to sell at a few dollars a piece, so there’s something for me to autograph that’s less than $20. Also, I’m assuming that people who go to my panel will be interested in that sort of thing. Comments?

Anyway I hope I’ll see some of you there. Here’s a description of the con:

Generations of kids have grown up reading and loving comics. And it’s not hard to see why comics have captured the imagination of kids and teens — with their unique blend of words and pictures, even the most everyday comics stories open up worlds of wonder.

And beyond the sheer joy of comics is the fact that they can help turn kids into more active and engaged readers. They also provide a model for young readers to explore and develop their own creativity.

But comics are no longer the mass medium they once were. Far fewer kids are exposed to them today, and many of the comics they find are intended for older readers. That’s where Kids Read Comics comes in!

Our Kids Read Comics Convention is a totally free event that unites kids, teens, parents, teachers and librarians with professional artists and writers from the comics and animation fields. Our goal is to introduce kids to worlds of imagination while unlocking their creative impulses, and to serve that goal, the convention features:

• hands-on workshops

• panels and presentations for kids, families, and educators

• a chance for kids to meet and chat with comics and animation professionals

• the opportunity for kids to have their own art portfolios reviewed

KRC also works throughout the year to promote comics and creativity for kids and teens. We’re building a recommended reading list; gathering resources for parents, teachers and librarians; and organizing artists and writers who can bring presentations and workshops to libraries around the state of Michigan and beyond.

I’m on Twitter

May 30th, 2010

My Facebook Page has reached the 5000 friend limit, and I couldn’t get most of you to follow me over to my new official Facebook home, The Dwayne McDuffie Page so I’m trying this: frequent updates at my new Twitter account: Dwayne_McDuffie. Follow me there, or at the The Dwayne McDuffie Page, which will mirror the Twitter Page, if I’ve set it up correctly. I’m also planning to put a widget on the dwaynemcduffie.com front page, if I can con Eugene into doing it for me. But no kidding this time, as soon as I have 1000 followers at the Twitter page, I’m shutting down the original Facebook page to everyone but actual friends and family.

Icon Mothership

My personal favorite run of Icon, back in print after over 15 years:

STRANDED ON EARTH FOR 10 GENERATIONS…

In 1839, an alien starliner malfunctioned and exploded. A jettisoned life pod crashed — in the middle of a cotton field, in the Deep South. The pod was equipped with a unique survival mechanism, which reconfigured the genetic structure of its passenger to match whatever life form it first encountered. And so it happened that Miriam, the slave woman who discovered the pod, found inside a baby boy with her mother’s eyes.

Stranded on our primitive world for nearly two centuries, the alien takes the guise of successful lawyer, Augustus Freeman IV. Eventually, encouraged by the passion of an opinionated young woman named Rocket, he dons a costume to symbolize Humanity’s potential, and uses his incredible powers to benefit us all as Icon, the Hero of Dakota.

A HERO IS GOING HOME…

Now things are about to change, Icon’s people have found him, and he’s about to return to his home in another galaxy. But Rocket refuses to give up the dream. The world needs Icon, and she’s determined to find someone to fill the role, even if it means somehow teaching the brain-damaged, 1970’s blaxploitation buffoon Buck Wild what it means to be a hero.

Writer Dwayne McDuffie (STATIC SHOCK, JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA) and artist M.D. Bright (GREEN LANTERN) present a groundbreaking, critically acclaimed story of hope and heroism both years ahead of its time and long overdue.

This features the complete saga of the belief-defyin’ Buck Wild, Mercenary Man, reveals the secret of the Big Bang, chronicles Icon’s return to his home planet, presents the adventures of the all-new Icon and Rocket, and includes guest shots from Static, Hardware, Dharma, Wise Son, DMZ and more! With guest artists including John Paul Leon and Chrisscross. We got three Eisner nominations for this run. If you’ve always wanted to try my comic book stuff, this would be a great place to start.
